Project #223 – Strawberry Shortcake Cookies

Oh, Martha. Usually I can depend on you to publish recipes that turn out exactly like the picture. I’ve even made all of your candy recipes from last December’s issue without breaking a sweat. How could it be that the one recipe that would throw me off would be one for a simple cookie. Your cookies look like fruity delights and mine look like…biscuits with dried fruit bits.

Still, thank goodness I have a husband who isn’t picky about snacks.

It looks like your problem is that you're not getting the cookies to spread. That's funny because typically people get too much spreading because they don't use cold butter. I wonder if that's why Martha puts in the baking powder; maybe she's anticipating your putting the butter in the microwave (fool!). Cut down the baking powder and you'll probably get better results.

As an aside, aren't her recipes awesome!? She's got an awesome recipe for a vanilla cheesecake that is easily tweakable to make into an oreo cheesecake. Of course, I'm a sucker for any recipe involving a springform pan.

You're probably right! I make a lot of pie crusts and shortbread, so I'm used to freezing my butter for a little bit before using it. That was probably the root of my downfall.
